Childhood Fame to Street Tragedy
Kianna Underwood died Friday morning after being struck by two vehicles whose drivers fled the scene in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood.
The 33-year-old former Nickelodeon actress was crossing Pitkin Avenue at Mother Gaston Boulevard around 6:45 a.m. when a black 2021 Ford Explorer crossed the double yellow line, struck her, and dragged her nearly two blocks. A second vehicle, described as a black-gray sedan, then hit her before both drivers fled without rendering aid.
Underwood’s entertainment career began in childhood when she voiced Fuchsia Glover in over 20 episodes of Nickelodeon’s “Little Bill” from 1999 to 2004.
She also appeared in the 10th season of “All That” in 2005 and voiced Dakota in the 2001 animated film “Santa Baby!” Additionally, she played Little Inez in the first national tour of “Hairspray,” showcasing her talents across multiple entertainment mediums during her youth.
Warning Signs Ignored by Industry
Angelique Bates, an original “All That” cast member, publicly warned in 2023 via Instagram that Underwood was headed for tragedy or jail without immediate intervention. Bates had maintained contact with Underwood since their 2005 reunion and witnessed her decline into homelessness.
The warning proved prophetic, highlighting how the entertainment industry failed to provide adequate support systems for former child performers facing mental health and housing crises.

Local residents in Brownsville knew Underwood well, regularly providing her with food, clothes, and money during her period of homelessness.
Store supervisor Andy Sierra, who frequently helped her, called her death a “tragedy” and noted her ongoing pleas for assistance. This grassroots community support contrasted sharply with the absence of institutional help from the entertainment industry that once profited from her talents.
Justice Delayed as Drivers Remain at Large
NYPD investigators released surveillance footage showing the horrific details of the incident, but no arrests have been made. The department describes the first vehicle as a black 2021 Ford Explorer and the second as a black-gray sedan.
Both drivers committed felony hit-and-run by fleeing the scene without providing aid or identifying themselves to authorities, actions that compound the tragedy with criminal cowardice.
The investigation continues with police urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Family member Anthony Underwood confirmed her death via social media while requesting privacy during their grief.
Bates told CBS News she hopes Underwood will be remembered for her humor and talent rather than her struggles, emphasizing the preventable nature of this tragedy had proper support systems existed.
